Restaurant team earn praise far and wideLaurel leaves might be more appropriate at the moment than oak leaves for Ray and Toni Urquhart of No 2 Oak Street. The husband and wife team, who own and run the well-known boutique Bellingen Restaurant, often just with the help of the son and dishwasher are being heaped with honours from far and wide. This time family operation last week won its third Northern Region Fine Dining Award of Excellence from Restaurant and Catering NSW. This year to the win was especially sweet as they beat Byron Bay’s much–lauded dish restaurant and raw bar, which Ray said could field five chefs to his sole-chef operation. No 2 Oak Street has been listed in two prestigious 2003 food guides – the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide and Australian Gourmet Traveller’s Restaurant Guide, as well as having been featured in a recent article in the Gourmet Traveller magazine. The recognition is a just reward for the couple who have worked hard for eight years to create and maintain high standards at No 2 Oak Street which offers a fine selection of boutique wines as well as fine food. Ray, who has been cooking for 30 years, says he keeps fresh by trying new things and creating new menus. Toni then has to go out and find the ingredients, so planned dishes are often modified or altered to fit what is fresh and available. Ray says seafood is the local area’s standout in the produce stakes. The Coffs Coast Advocate Food and Wine Thursday April 24, 2003 By Belinda Scott |
