Good Food Guide 2002Down a quiet side street in one of the area’s most picturesque villages, this 90-year-old timber cottage is a softly glowing beacon to attentive pleasure. A new lick of paint (a creamy line wash) has lightened and brightened the dining room with its open fire. On warm nights it’s fun to settle into garden furniture on the verandah and let the enthusiastic Toni Urquhart take you through husband Ray’s baker’s dozen Asian, Med and down home country dishes. Prosciutto-wrapped lambs brains with asparagus and tomato are a spot-on marriage of taste texture and colour. Barbequed squid on a julienne of vegies has sweet-sour-savory balance in a palm sugar dressing. Succulent game fish, caught off the Coffs coast, is sweetly fragrant on Asian greens with barbequed eggplant, wasabi verjuice and a crown of pickled ginger. Their sweets of peach semifreddo with caramelised peaches and lemongrass pannacotta with macerated figs deserve heritage listing. |
