Good Food Guide 2001Just around the corner from the town’s memorial to its lost sons lies the warm glow of this pretty timber cottage. Ray and Toni Urquhart settled in the picturesque Bellingen valley four years ago, tracking down the best local produce for hearty honest country dishes. An effervescent Toni flits from diners in deckchairs on the verahdah to the small soft-lit dining room, pointing out the lesser-known lights on a thoughtful wine list. Local famed rabbit is a sweet treat in a rocket salad dressed with sesame oil. Sticky, succulent slow-braised duck confit drapes over an earthly jumble of potato and roast apple, while lamb cutlet sits on a fried sweet potato cake, spurred on by a minted jus. A big white casserole pot holds a gumbo-like mix of chicken strips, okra, tomato and garlic on a bed of rice. To finish, lime and coconut pudding is naughty and nice. |
