Wherever you stay on this stretch of coast, a visit here is a must if you’re a food lover. Husband-and-wife team Toni and Ray Urquhart transformed this dilapidated1910 house into a restaurant with a welcoming, buzzy vibe – which is in no small part due to Toni’s vivacious presence on the floor.  It’s real family affair with daughter Shani often assisting out the front, and son Michael, Ray’s apprentice, helping to turn out consistently creative, modern food.

Ray creates exciting flavours in entrees such as marinated barbequed quail with crisp ya pear (similar to a nashi) and a lime and ginger dressing, or puts his mark on classics, such as stacks of parmesan - crusted veal piccata with salsa verde. The local catch of the day becomes the daily fish special and, in the colder months, Ray usually has rabbit and venison dishes on offer.
